Meet the Presenter - Matt MacNamara

1.    How did you first get introduced to crafts?

I’ve always loved craft and had such great respect for anyone who makes and creates crafty items. At craft fairs it is always me that holds up everyone else in the group while I chat to the people on the stalls about what they have made. My wife Karen, or Mrs M, is very crafty too. She’s into the classic decoupage, upcycling old boxes and furniture. She also makes her own jewellery and I sometimes help her run the stalls at craft fairs..

2.    What have been your highlights so far on Hochanda?

We have a very talented pool of guests, so there is always something so creative going on in the studio, so honestly, every day is highlight. I’ve also had the good fortune to have tried several crafts for the first time ever. It’s pleasantly surprising to discover that to be a good crafter you don’t necessarily have to be artistic, you just need to be imaginative and creative. We all have our own imagination and creativity – therefore we can all craft!

Also, this is going to sound really silly, but I've been a viewer of shopping TV for well over a decade now, it was a real pleasure to meet and work with Tim Evans recently. I remember watching him on TV demonstrating the V-Slicer back in about 2003. I hope I will be working with him a lot more during my time at Hochanda.

3.    What are you looking forward to next with Hochanda?

I am looking forward to learning much more about both wood working and wood turning. Getting creative in the kitchen is a big thing for me too, so I get excited whenever we feature a new cooking item or gadget. Also, I know it’s not very manly to admit this, but I’m looking forward to buying my first sewing machine. Mrs M and I both agree that every home needs one!

4.    If there was one other craft that you would like to try what would it be?

I really enjoyed pottery when I was at school, so I hope there’s a chance to do that soon!

Tune in to Hochanda every day 24/7 for lots of fun and crafty demonstrations! Watch our programmes live >

You can also tune into Hochanda on Freeview channel 39, Sky channel 663 or Freesat 817.

How To Give Used Candle Jars A New Lease Of Life

Hello again everyone, I have a completely different post for you this time!

I keep buying all this ‘stuff’ and it’s so nice I can’t bring myself to use it … but it’s starting to get out of control and taking over my home!!
So I’m challenging myself on 2 levels – 1) use up my stuff; and 2) try something new.

Well I had some empty candle jars so I thought this would be a good way to use up some stuff and try something new at the same time and this is what I came up with.

I am over the moon with the results as it’s the first time I’ve tried anything like this.

What I used: ·Empty candle jar ·Decoart white gesso ·Starlight paints ·Decoart metallic paints ·Imagination Crafts rice papers ·Imagination Crafts fabric glue ·Twine ·Raffia ·Hessian ·Ribbon ·Paper flowers and embellishments from craft box
Here’s what I did:
Firstly, I applied a coat of white gesso to the jar and allowed it to dry. I then chose a selection of paints that go together and randomly sponged all over the jar until it was covered. T…
