Debbie Shore’s Threaders Project 3: Cutting Mat Carrier

If you're going to a craft class of just ned to store your cutting equipment, this pretty case can be custom made to any size you like, and add a few extra pockets if you need to! Use a 1/4" seam allowance.

Materials Needed (Based on a cutting mat measuring 17" x 11"):

  • 2 pieces of fabric measuring 19" x 14"
  • 2 pieces of fusible fleece measuring 19" x 14"
  • 2 pieces of lining fabric measuring 19" x 14"
  • For the pocket, 2 pieces of fabric, one plain and one patterned, measuring 22" x 6"
  • 2 lengths of 1" wide webbing, each measuring 16"
  • Erasable ink pen
  • Magnetic clasp

1. Fuse the fleece to the outer fabric pieces. Measure 5" along the sides and top from each top corner, and cut at an angle. Repeat with the lining pieces.

2. Fold the lining pieces in half to crease the centre line. Measure and mark 1.5" from the top. Cut two 2" squares of lining fabric from the left over corners, and place on the back of your marks. This will help to strengthen the fabric around the clasps. Apply one half of the clasp to each side of the lining.

3. To make up the pockets, sew the long edges of patterned and plain fabrics right sides together. Turn the right side out, and roll so that a 1/2" strip of lining shows at the top. Press, then top stitch along the seam.

4. Pin each raw edge to the sides of the bad, 2" from the bottom. Pin the pocket at intervals to make dividing pockets, these can be any size you like. Draw vertical lines at your pin marks with your erasable pen.

5. Tack along the sides, then sew along the dividing lines, removing the pins as you go. Sew the handles, facing inwards, to the top of the panels.

6. Place the lining pieces over the pocket panels. Sew together along the top three sides.

7. Sew the packet panels right sides together, starting and stopping at the point where the lining meets. Fold over the flaps, and sew the lining pieces together in the same way, this time leaving a gap in the base of about 6" for turning.

8. Turn the right side out and press. Sew the opening in the lining closed then push the lining inside the bad. Press around the top.

Double over each of the three paper star strips and cut all the ends at an angle. Put a star strip around another star strip and fold it tightly three times around this star strip. This is illustrated in the picture. Repeat this process with the other two star strips. Step 3. Assemble the three paper star strips over and under each other, forming three double le
